New Central Hierarchy
Hierarchical configuration enables a detailed and flexible enterprise‑grade setup with multi-tiered scopes of configuration
Definitions
Learn more about New Central Configuration here.
New Central has a series of scopes that define a hierarchy. The scopes from top, down are listed as follows, with the top scope being the largest and the bottom scope being the smallest:
- Library: Exists as the highest level of the hierarchy, profiles created at this level can be assigned to any hierarchy scope below.
- Global: First of the local levels and encapsulates all site collections and sites.
- Site Collection: Optional, but recommended for larger deployments with many sites.
- Site: Network site with an attributed address with devices assigned to a site.
- Device: The lowest level on the hierarchy that inherits from all the levels above it. Device categories include: Bridge, Mobility AP, Switch, and Gateway.
Hierarchy Precedence
Hierarchy precedence is an inversion of the hierarchy levels. Device level configurations have the highest precedence, while the Global level configurations have the lowest precedence. Devices will inherit configuration from their upper hierarchy levels, but unique configurations can be attributed to devices with unique, specific functionality.

Constructs
Device Function
Properties of the device determines what configuration gets pushed to the devices. For example, an access switch will not have the same configuration as a core switch. This will prevent incompatible configurations from being pushed to incompatible devices and reduce configuration errors.
Device Groups (Optional in New Central)
Device Groups are an optional parameter in New Central that cuts across the entire hierarchy. This can be used to group devices and apply device configurations, however devices can only belong to one group.
Local Configuration Profiles
Everything below the Library level can be considered a Local Configuration Profile. Local Configuration Profiles are created at the scope level and scope assignment is automatically inherited. A device function/persona must be selected for that configuration to take effect
