Checklist for implementation

Enterprise Firewall and EdgeConnect Team request

Orchestrator, Portal, and IPSLA rules.

  • Outbound Firewall rules:

    • *.silverpeak.cloud port 443

      • if required granular rules:

        • "Cloud Orch full URL".silverpeak.cloud port 443

        • "Cloud orch -sc-xxxx URL" for advanced stats collectors

        • portal.silverpeak.cloud port 443

        • portal2.silverpeak.cloud 443

      • sp-ipsla.silverpeak.cloud ICMP Echo/Reply (IPV4 only)

      • sp-ipsla2.silverpeak.cloud ICMP Echo/Reply (IPV4/IPV6)

      • If internet access not generally allowed, ensure Network team has access to above URLS.

      • Recommend adding above rules to all internet Firewalls to help prevent a device from getting isolated, EC will call home on all interfaces.

      • For Direct Edge Connect to case File upload must allow: *.com.s3.amazonaws.com

        • Will need EC zone rule to allow application "S3-amazonaws"
      • Application BrightCloud (IDS/IPS)

        • URL: *.brightcloud.com
      • Bypass SSL inspection for all above URLS

❗️

Advanced stats collectors add "-sc-xxxxx" in the ORCH URL to talk to the collectors, please note stats collection traffic might be blocked if you do not update your firewall rules, to avoid this allowing traffic too *.silverpeak.cloud is best practice.

  • > ❗️ Edge Connect WAN interface behind Firewall is not best practice.

Performance is negatively impacted by Layer 7 firewalls and deep packet inspection. Using an L3/L4 "external/edge" firewall is acceptable and will not impact performance, provided the appliance is capable of handling the full WAN throughput of the SD-WAN deployment.

    • UDP session Timeout - Varies by FW vendor - prevent tunnels flapping
      • Recommend 1 hour
        • Only needed for EC tunnel UDP traffic - not global
      • HUB/Datacenter Edge Connect WAN is behind Firewall
        • Outbound UDP 12000/12010 (default adjust if changed)
        • Inbound UDP 12000/12010 (default adjust if changed)
        • 1:1 Static NAT for EC WAN interfaces
      • Spoke Edge connect WAN behind firewall
        • Outbound UDP 12000/12010 (default adjust if changed)
        • 1:1 static nat preferred
          • NAT acceptable
      • DNS - 8.8.8.8|8.8.4.4 outbound port 53
  • HUB/Datacenter Edge Connect WAN is behind Firewall
    • Outbound UDP 12000/12010 (default adjust if changed)
    • Inbound UDP 12000/12010 (default adjust if changed)
    • 1:1 Static NAT for EC WAN interfaces
  • Spoke Edge connect WAN behind firewall
    • Outbound UDP 12000/12010 (default adjust if changed)
    • 1:1 static nat preferred
      • NAT acceptable
  • Provide Network team Logging and security IPs
    • Syslog IP
  • Orch access
    • SSO/SAML (coordinate)
🚧

Security Scanning Information

  • EC's have a FLOW count limit, scanners can quickly overwhelm these limits while scanning, each port for each endpoint will be 1 flow - scanning all TCP and UDP ports would be ~130,000 Flows. 10108 and smaller ECs have 256,000 flow limits and EC Medium and larger have 2 million flow limit. Please refer to the chart below for recommendations.

    • Assumptions:
      • Scans must be during business hours
      • All on network devices are scanned
      • Only scans that traverse the SDWAN apply.
      • Use Firewall Protection Profiles (FPP) to protect EC from high number of scans, preventing outages, if FPP interferes with scans use the below table for further integrations.
  • Preferred Methods
Prioritize the assets to be scanned and Limit the number of flows created
Adjust and control scan rate and speed of the Scanner.
Prioritize scanning "moving user devices" like computer vlans, schedule other vlans for phones and printers after hours, devices that are normally not disconnected like user devices are
For very large sites considered a local scanners on site. This will allow fast scanning without affecting the WAN
Offset the scans instead of doing one bulky scan
Scan 20% of multiple sites rather than one entire site at one time.

For further information, please refer to the detailed documentation provided in the scan-guidance section.scan-guidance
