VRRP General

🚧

Do not use VRRP and BGP together on the same VLAN/VIP

  1. Make a VLAN for VRRP to use if you only have one link for routing on the EC, this allows VRRP to monitor the health of LAN (cables/hardware/etc.) and EC for failover.
    1. /29 on a sub interface required
📘

9.6 adds a Site/cluster tracking feature

Please review the "with" and "without" sections

❗️

This is a per Site/Cluster feature, depending on the VRRP config

🚀

Best Practice: Choose the method for the EC site/cluster

  1. Without Site/Cluster Tracking
  2. With Site/Cluster Tracking

Edge Connect route selection

Pre-9.6 (9.5,9.4 etc.)

  1. Longest Prefix
  2. AD (Lowest)
  3. Metric (Lowest)
  4. Peer Priority (Lowest, default 1024)
  5. Random - ECMP

9.6.2.x and later

  1. Longest Prefix
  2. AD (Lowest)
  3. Metric (Lowest)
  4. VRRP State Tracking (P) <<<<<NEW
  5. Peer Priority (Lowest, default 1024)
  6. BGP AS-Path Length (Shortest) <<<<<NEW
  7. Random - ECMP

NOTE: Route priority last updated/verified 15JUL2026

Enabling 9.6+ VRRP failover feature (Site/Cluster tracking).

You must enable the feature in the VRRP configs
