WAN Circuit Guidance

❗️

Hub/Data Center appliances or appliances that have mesh overlays must have a compatible IP/NAT. See Chart below

❗️

In a mesh topology, all devices are connected to each other. Therefore, at least one circuit at each location must be in the "fully supported" section of the table.

🚧

"Burstable" circuit types are not recommended

Best Practice: Two diverse carrier circuits at all locations

Examples for binary digit transportation options

  • Group A:(GA)
    • Cable modem
    • Business fiber (BF)(FTTH/FTTB)
    • Low Earth Orbit satellite (unlimited data no obstructions)
    • Dual Carrier 4/5G LTE with good signal/speed test (unlimited data)
    • DSL (Fast near node)
    • Expensive options:
      • DIA (higher cost, high reliability, medium bandwidth for cost)
      • MPLS(highest cost, high reliability, low latency, Low bandwidth)
    • Group B: (GB)
      • Two cable modems/Business Fiber/DIA (same ISP)
      • 4/5G LTE with good signal/speed test (unlimited data)
      • DSL (slower far from node)
      • Low Earth Orbit satellite (unlimited data some obstructions)
    • Group C:(GC)
      • 5G LTE with good signal/speed test (data limited or low signal)
      • 4G LTE with good signal/speed test (data limited or low signal)
      • two or three 4/5G LTE diverse carriers with fair signal/speed test (data limits)
      • Low Earth Orbit satellite (limited data)
      • High orbit satellite
      • Preferred combination:
        • 2-GA + 1-GB +1-GC
        • 1-GB + 1-GB +1-GC
      • Availability limited Combination
        • 3-GB + 1-GC
        • 2-GB + 1-GC
        • 1-GB + 1-GC
      • Better than nothing combinations
        2-GC
        1-GC

Bandwidth Requirements:

While the bandwidth requirements for SD-WAN are highly variable, circuits with less than 1 Mbps upload and less than 3 Mbps download are generally not enough to sustain even a single user. However, multiple circuits can be combined, and this may be better than nothing as a last resort. Lower bandwidth circuits will still provide FEC capability to the SDWAN system.
